05Hand-cut glass

Look closer.

Every mural is thousands of individual pieces of glass, each cut by hand and set one at a time. From across the room it reads as a painting. Up close it is a surface that catches light differently at every hour.

Italian glass, gold leaf and natural stone, chosen piece by piece for colour and depth.

The story.

A mosaic portrait in progress on the studio bench

Art in every piece.

Sole Design is a Mumbai studio working in three crafts that rarely sit under one roof: glass mosaic, hand-carved wood and embroidered textile art. What connects them is a way of working. Every piece begins with a conversation in the room it is meant for, becomes a full-scale drawing, and is then made by hand, once.

The mosaic work uses imported Italian glass, cut and laid tessera by tessera on the studio bench before it travels to site. The collection runs from portraits and devotional imagery to wildlife, koi ponds, abstract colour fields, swimming pools and commercial emblems.

The carving workshop produces doors, staircases, ceiling panels, cornices and sculptural furniture, drawn to fit the architecture and carved in relief by hand. The embroidery collection brings the same layered, jewelled surface to thread.

The work lives in private homes, hotels and bars across Mumbai, from a twelve-foot lion in a BKC foyer to the emblem made for Hazel Bar. Every commission is handled personally: the first meeting happens at your home or site, the drawing is approved before a single piece is cut, and you are welcome in the studio while your piece is on the bench.

Every piece is drawn for the room it will live in, and made once.
